dax says opencode rewrote opentunnel in Rust and moved it live

A language rewrite plus a cutover off Cloudflare onto 10 Fly regions, reported by the person who ran it.

dax says he had opencode rewrite the opentunnel backend in Rust and move it off Cloudflare onto 10 Fly regions around the world. By his account the cutover went cleanly and existing users did not have to do anything. "it gracefully handled the migration and everyone's tunnels just reconnected to the new system", he wrote, and ended the post with "beautiful".

That is the whole report. There is no diff size, no timeline, no cost figure, and no before and after latency number, so what is on the table is a claim from the person who operates the service rather than anything an outsider can check.

Why this one is different from a demo

Most agent wins that circulate are greenfield. Someone points a model at an empty directory, gets a few thousand lines back, and the only thing at stake is whether the thing compiles. This is two harder problems stacked. The first is a port across languages, where the new implementation has to match behaviour that was never fully written down. The second is a live infrastructure move between providers, where the failure mode is not a red test, it is customers noticing.

The detail dax picked out is the reconnect. Tunnels are long lived connections, so a migration that users do not have to think about means the new backend accepted clients that were already pointed at the old one and the handover held. That is the part that usually generates the incident channel.

For working engineers

Treat it as one operator's result on one system, not a general claim about agents doing migrations. The signal worth keeping is which half of the work the agent was trusted with. dax has argued before that custom agent setups tend to fix problems that no longer exist, and this is consistent with that posture, less scaffolding around the model, more of the actual job handed over, with the operator still the one deciding when to flip traffic.

Nobody else has reported numbers on the move yet.
